Backlock - Safe Blade Locking System

16. července 2019

Backlock is a popular and safe blade locking system that prevents the blade from closing automatically. Mikov uses it on his Fixir, Hunter, Hablock or Crocodile knives.

The backlock is characterized by a spring-loaded shutter at the end with a protrusion. This fits into the recess in the blade where it is spring-loaded. To close the knife, press on the back of the knife handle to the part of the pin that is pulled out of it. This will release the tabs that hold the blade and then close it freely. However, both hands should usually be used to close the knife, which may sometimes be a disadvantage.

For the backlock to function properly, it is necessary to precisely process the moving parts of the knife during production and ensure that they have the same hardness. If this is not the case, the protrusion and self-closing of the knife could occur.

Therefore, when buying a knife, it is necessary to first check whether the fuse holds well and the knife does not close itself. But above all, it is important to consider whether it is the type that is suitable for our purposes. For some types of knives, it is necessary to exert a relatively high pressure when releasing the knife, so that children, for example, might have problems closing it.

Although backlock is one of the most popular safety locks, some people prefer other types, such as framelock or linerlock, which we will be looking at next time.
